Maintaining Reliable Operation of Isolated Power Districts with Industrial Loads Through Use of Hybrid Power Storage Systems

The use of power storage systems (PSS) in isolated power districts with industrial loads is currently increasing. The introduction of a hybrid PSS (featuring a Li-ion battery and a supercapacitor) prevents unnecessary shutdowns of gas piston units (GPU) and key electrical loads during sharp load surges and load dumps. This helps provide the reliable operation of isolated power districts and extend the repair intervals of GPU within the distributed generation (DG) system. Combining load surge/dump mitigation algorithms and rotation reserve substitution in the automated control system (ACS) of the hybrid PSS is an effective solution. Using a semi-active topology for the hybrid PSS with a supercapacitor (SC) connection through the DC-DC converter allows for the complete compensation of load surges and dumps with the supercapacitor. This prevents pulse current from affecting the Li-ion battery (LIB) and preserves its service life cycles. The authors developed load control algorithms for a hybrid PSS where load setting and distribution between the SC and LIB are performed while controlling their state of charge. The results of modeling in MATLAB Simulink confirm the efficiency of hybrid PSS control algorithms for different circuits and operating modes.
