Synchrophasor Enabled Energy Monitoring, Management and Control of Solar PV-Battery Interfaced Microgrid

The incorporation of renewable energy sources, such as Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) systems with battery storage in microgrids has gained significance in response to rising energy demand and the need for sustainable power solutions. However, the management and regulation of those systems provide a variety of intricate difficulties, including but not limited to energy management, grid stability and resource optimisation. The proposed work aims to address these challenges by leveraging Synchrophasor Technology (ST) using Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), controllers and converters to enable comprehensive monitoring, management, and control of SPV-battery interfaced microgrids. In terms of effectiveness, cost, and system size, a single-stage SPV system with an MPPT is also more suited for a grid-connected microgrid. Energy management is also proposed by a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a bidirectional DC-DC converter and a Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) in the SPV system since intermittent energy output might not be able to meet energy demand. The work also aims to create a coordinated control of a single-stage SPV real power injection with the incorporation of the battery’s performance to achieve optimal power harvest from the SPV module as well as real power injection through battery health monitoring even in fault scenarios. The whole system was modelled in MATLAB/Simulink and the performance characteristics were analysed to show that the PMUs and controllers in conjunction with the VSC and converter monitor and manage the SPV and BESS power effectively.
