On The Performance Of Beamforming Techniques Based On 3D Predefined Codebook Designs In 3GPP Mobile Communication Systems

The next decade will encounter many emerging applications that require the connection of new devices and the exchange of higher data rates. The mm Wave bands are considered as a solution that gives new facilities with a tremendous amount of spectrum to the fifth generation and beyond communications. However, the path loss increases significantly with the mm Wave frequencies. To compensate the path loss, achieve high data rates, and overcome the over mmWaves limitations such as the interference, the MIMO architectures based on directional beamforming technology will be considered. The main steps in managing the beams are the construction of the codebook and the generation of the beam selection method. Recently, many codebook designs and beam selection methods have been proposed to achieve an efficient beamforming process. In this paper, we will analyze the impact of the predefined codebook design and the used selection technique on the performance of the 3GPP mobile communication systems in terms of data throughput and complexity. Simulation results show that an increase in the size of the codebook can improve the spectral efficiency with higher training overhead. Moreover, the local search technique can achieve spectral efficiency values very close to the exhaustive selection technique with lower complexity.
