An 11-kW Bidirectional On-Board Charger with Highly Integrated SiC-Cascode Technology

The adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) is growing at a fast rate, as a response to the environmental challenges globally. Semiconductor technology development is key in the transition from combustion engines to cleaner EVs, as it correlates to driving range increase and cost reduction. The SiC-Cascode power switch is a new contender within the EV market, which features promising performance and reliability. This paper introduces the design of a bidirectional 11-kW On- Board Charger (OBC), based around highly integrated SiCCascode power switches that include functions to profit from the great advantages of the SiC technology. The performance of the system is studied with adequate modelling of the device, and a highly competitive system with high efficiency and reduced figure of merit, is demonstrated.
