Gigabit Cislunar INSPIRE network enabled by Omnidirectional Optical Terminals

Chascii is developing omnidirectional optical terminals (OOTs) to provide fast connectivity in cislunar space. The OOT will allow assets around and on the moon to connect with each other and with Earth at gigabit data rates. Key features of the OOT include a) gigabit connectivity, b) multiplelink capability, and c) full sky coverage. The OOT is one of the key technologies that Chascii is developing as a key enabler of its INterplanetary SPace internet (INSPIRE) network [1]. The cislunar INSPIRE subnetwork includes 24 nodes: 8 ground nodes, 8 nodes in GEO, 4 in Earth-moon Lagrange point 1 (L1), and 4 in L2. The ground nodes consist of advanced optical ground stations equipped with around 1 meter diameter optical apertures, and adaptive optics for 100 Gigabit connectivity with its GEO counterparts. The lunar and GEO nodes include a new generation of smallsats equipped with optical terminals with 10 to 20 cm apertures for 10- to 100-Gigabit connectivity with Earth, respectively. In this paper, we present the design considerations of our space optical terminals. We include optical link budget calculations obtained using pulse-position modulation for connectivity among the various INSPIRE nodes.
