Performance analysis of reliability in Mid-infrared FSO Communication

The reliability of the mid-infrared Free Space Optical (FSO) communication system is mainly discussed in this paper. In the influence of the atmospheric attenuation and atmospheric turbulence the bit error rate performance of the mid-infrared and the near-infrared FSO communication under different visibility conditions is theoretically analyzed. Numerical calculations show that the mid-infrared band has a stronger ability to resist atmospheric attenuation and atmospheric turbulence than the near-infrared band. Finally, the mid-infrared FSO communication system experiment was built by using the 4.65um quantum cascade laser (QCL) mid-infrared laser source and the mercury cadmium tellurium (MCT) mid-infrared detector, with a channel distance of 0.8m, and the rectangular wave signal, which frequency is 20Mhz and duty cycle is 50% was successfully transmitted.
