Investigation of Methods to Improve the Performance of Frequency Reconfigurable Antenna for Future Wireless Communication

The paper demonstrates the design and implementation of a novel UWB frequency reconfigurable antenna and various methods that can used to improve its performance. The designed antenna operates in the UWB range covering the frequency range between 3.1-10.6 GHz. The antenna demonstrates good results for return loss (S11) < -10 dB, and VSWR less than 1.5. Multiband, multi-functional, and reconfigurable are the three main characteristics of the antenna presented in this paper. Further, the paper highlights the various approaches that can be used to improve the antenna performance, which include the use of Defected Ground Structures (DGS), Partial ground mechanisms, Loading the radiating patch with slots and slits, etc. The arrangement of partial ground, radiating patch loaded with slots and slits produces five operating bands (4, 4.62, 7.21, 9.8, and 12.17 GHz) which finds applications for WiMAX, Satellite communication for C, X, and Ku bands, Microwave links, Medical Imaging, Scientific research, Remote sensing, cognitive radio, and Radar systems.
