Mitigation of Subsynchronous Resonance by STATCOM with Fuzzy Logic Controller

One drastic procedure to enhance the power flow capacity of Power System networks is to use series compensation in long transmission lines. Nevertheless, the phenomenon of subsynchronous resonance (SSR) in mechanical and electrical systems can result from the use of series capacitors. This phenomenon could harm shaft of a turbine generator. The key component of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) is Static Compensator (STATCOM), which is employed for betterment of dynamic performance of power systems, control power factor, manage voltage, and stabilize power flow. It can also effectively dampen SSR, but in order to suppress SSR, an auxiliary controller must be added to the STATCOM. This paper compares the results of adding two types of fuzzy logic controllers to STATCOM: the Mamdani type and the Sugeno type. An adaptation of IEEE Second Benchmark Model was used for this study. Utilizing MATLAB simulation, results have been obtained.
