A Smooth-Walled Spline-Profile Horn for Ka-band Satellite Communication Applications

A smooth-walled spline-profile horn (SWSPH) with short length to be used as a feed on a dual-reflector antenna for Ka-band satellite communication applications is proposed in this paper. The length of the horn is only 90.5mm (5.3 times the wavelength of 17.7GHz) including sinusoidal and exponential profiles. The radiation pattern of the SWSPH can achieve <1 dB amplitude ripple in the −10 dB beam width (${\mathrm {BW}}_{-\text{10dB}}$) range of ±30° in 17.7~21.2 GHz and ±25° in 27.5~31.0 GHz frequency bands. Within these entire frequency bands, the VSWR of the SWSPH are below 1.1 and the gain are greater than 15.0 dBi.
