Design and Analysis of a Novel Millimeter Wave Tunable Frequency Selective Metasurface with Integrated MEMS Switch

This paper presents a novel millimeter wave tunable frequency selective metasurface (T-FSS). It is implemented by split-ring resonator (SRR) units with integrated MEMS switch. The MEMS switch is equivalent to an adjustable capacitance, which can change the equivalent circuit parameters of the T-FSS, thereby modulating the resonant frequency. A set of algebraic formulations are derived to calculate the resonant frequency of the proposed tunable FSS. Finally, a tunable FSS with a millimeter wave antenna array is designed and analyzed, the full-wave simulation results show that the resonant frequency tunable range of the T-FSS is from 27GHz to 28.2GHz, and the transmission rate is greater than $80 \%$. The antenna array with the T-FSS can be reconfigurable in two operating bands.
