A mm-Scale Low-Frequency Magnetoelectric Antenna for Short-Range Communications in Biomedical Implants

This work proposes an experimental demonstration of a wireless communication system with a mm-scale low-frequency Magnetoelectric receiving antenna that operates at a resonance frequency of 49.9 kHz. The proposed antenna is intended for short-range communication up to 200 cm, with a received power of −47.4 dBm. The proposed device has a limit-of-detection (LoD) of 0.3 mOe, and the corresponding voltage spectral density is $1.9 \mu V / \sqrt{H z}$ at 49.9 kHz. The device has a magnetic field sensitivity of 0.55 V/Oe. The near-field data transfer has been successfully established by the transmission of a base-band signal ”10101010” employing the frequency shift keying (FSK) modulation technique. The received signal is successfully recorded at two different misaligned angles between the transmitting coil and the ME device, 0 and 90 degree in the azimuth plane. Due to the unique features of the lead-free heterostructure based ME antenna, such as low frequency, miniaturized size, ease of fabrication, and cost-effectiveness, it has potential application in implantable biomedical electronics.
