Synthesis of Unequally Spaced Antenna Array with Reduced Design Complexity and Computational Cost

In this paper, a novel method of synthesizing unequally spaced array (UESA) antenna is proposed. For UESA, the problem dimension (D) i.e., the number of unknown variables is increased with increasing the number of array elements. Usually, the stochastic evolutionary algorithm is employed to determine the unknown element positions of the array under consideration. For large array, the design complexity is increased, and the algorithm takes large computational time to find out unknown variables. In this paper, a novel UESA structure consisting of multiple sub-arrays with equally spaced elements is proposed. As the constituent elements within a sub-array are equally spaced, the number of unknown design variables to be determined for the proposed array structure is drastically reduced. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, the numerical results by considering a 30-element array is presented and compared with the previously reported results.
