Solar Fed LiFePO4 Battery Based LED Street Lighting For Rural Kerala, India

As of 2021, India is the 3rd largest energy-consuming country in the world and is ranked 3rd in renewable energy production with the largest renewable energy expansion plan for the future. Apart from electricity, proper lighting is one of the basic needs of humanity which has to be satisfied at any cost. Similarly, street lighting in rural Kerala is a major concern considering the devastating conditions through which the state goes through like floods, stray dog attacks, etc. The project LUMEN under IEEE EPICS is aimed at providing LED Street light solutions for the rural outskirts of Avoly Gramapanchayat. The inclusion of Lithium-Ferro Phosphate Battery technology accompanied by Solar Photovoltaic solution makes the project the first of its kind project in Kerala. The project apart from the implementation level gives priority to the optimization of the same so that overall reliability and longevity of the system is ensured. The paper discusses on the impact and significance of Technological Humanitarian projects to improve the living standards of deprived communities adhering to Sustainable Development Goal 3: “Good health and well-being”. The paper emphasizes on the substantial advantage of using the latest trends in technology as Lithium energy storage devices accompanied by Renewable energy-fed LED street lights.
