Feasibility Study of UV Spectroscopy for Measurement of Bone Mineral Density

The quantitative assessment of the mineral makeup and density of bone tissue is known as bone density measurement. It is a diagnostic technique for evaluating the strength and stability of bones, particularly for conditions like osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a state where the human bone has a lower than necessary bone density which usually occurs in elder humans. A condition where the bone is so brittle that a normal strike on the bone can cause fractures and ruptures and the bone density usually degrades with age people in society above the age of 50 are commonly affected with osteoporosis as from what is seen. This study looks into the viability and precision of measuring bone absorbance using UV light as an alternative technique. The goal is to determine whether using UV light instead of more traditional methods, including dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and quantitative ultrasound (QUS), could have advantages in determining bone density. As older people seem to be affected by X-ray-based scans due to various old age sensitivity reasons as the treatment and diagnosis on an orthopedic platform is very much carried out for such people, a less harmful UV light sensing technique can be much better in terms of radiography effects. DXA scans involve the use of X-rays, which expose patients to ionizing radiation. UV light-based densitometers provide a radiation-free alternative, making repeated measurements safer and reducing potential long-term radiation risks due to less scan time. The investigation involves passing UV light through a sample of bone material. The UV light passes through the bone minerals and is absorbed by them. The higher the bone density, the higher the absorption detected, and the output side is measured with a lower light intensity. Over a range of wavelengths, an analysis employing a UV-visible spectrophotometer, bone powder, and human bone absorbtivity is assessed. As a result, we are creating testing equipment to assess UV light absorption as it passes through a bone sample using UV sensors.
