Learning Chemical Compositions through Music

Our knowledge of nature revolves around our senses of sight, hearing, and touch. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of music as a pedagogical tool in the field of education. Specifically, the potential for music to aid in learning chemical compositions has not been explored. Here, we explore the evidence supporting this idea and the potential limitations and challenges of integrating music into education. Studies have shown that music has the ability to enhance memory retention, cognitive processing, and overall engagement in academic material. Additionally, research suggests that incorporating music into education may increase student motivation and help students of all learning styles better internalise complex concepts. However, when it comes to communicating chemical formulae, we primarily rely on language processing through chemical formulas. In this piece, an attempt is made to use music to describe the chemical composition of molecules. Each element in the periodic table has a sound, and regarding specific chemical compositions, music has been shown to aid in the memorisation of formulas, names, and symbols. In this paper, we have developed an embedded system with a suggested algorithm to recognise the characters when the user writes the chemical composition on a touchpad developed on an embedded system. Since the elements are already mapped with the musical tone, it plays the matching audio by combining all the musical tones. Such a system can be beneficial for various types of learners to study chemical compositions and equations in a fun way. Additionally, it may be used as a tool to instruct people with disabilities in a broader range of subjects. This can also be extended to uniquely represent complex chemical compositions like DNA, RNA, and polymers.
