Optimal Integration of Large-Scale Solar and Battery Energy Storage System in Malaysia

The paper presents a comprehensive study on the optimal development and integration of a Large Scale Solar Photovoltaic (LSS PV) system with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Malaysia. The research focuses on three main objectives to ensure efficient and cost-effective solar power generation and grid integration. Different types of solar PV panels; monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin film have been analyzed for their technical performance and economic impact. A 50 MW LSS PV system is simulated in Kampung Kuala Kuli in Kedah due to its favorable Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI) index. Then, a seamless integration of the LSS PV system into the grid, considering system constraints and optimal operation has been performed considering load flows during normal and contingency analysis, total power loss, QV, and reactive power capability to ensure the grid's stable and reliable performance following LSS PV system integration. Finally, the paper studies various battery technologies to determine their economic impact when integrated with the LSS PV system. The cost of energy (COE) is analyzed for different types and sizes of BESS to identify the most cost-effective solution, facilitating the efficient storage and utilization of surplus solar energy. The findings from this study will provide valuable insights for policymakers, energy planners, and investors looking to deploy large-scale solar PV systems with battery storage in Malaysia. The research outcomes contribute to the advancement of sustainable energy integration and help in accelerating the adoption of renewable energy sources for a greener and more resilient power grid.
