Navigating the Challenges and Harnessing Emerging Trends in EV Charging Infrastructure Development

The surging adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) necessitates an urgent development and upgrade of global charging infrastructure to manage the growing demand. The paper tackles the numerous challenges faced in off-board charging, which include high installation costs, longer charging times that cause station congestion, potential utility disruptions due to unscheduled charging, and the strategic placement of stations. Additionally, the safety concern raised by the increasing weight of high-speed charging cables is also discussed. The report further delves into the complications of on-board charging, focusing on achieving optimal power density, maintaining system reliability at higher power levels, and the issue of managing the bulky electrolytic capacitors. Despite these challenges, the study emphasizes positive trends such as the increase in battery capacities and voltages, as well as the rise in On-Board Charger (OBC) power levels. However, the improvements have not yet reached the point of enabling fast charging capabilities. This comprehensive review provides a critical examination of the current challenges and unfolding trends in the development of EV charging infrastructure and solutions.
