Design Patterns for Optimization Models of Flexible Energy Resources

The operation of flexible energy resources is frequently optimized by means of mixed-integer linear programs. Optimization models often use recurrent constraints to represent resource behavior. However, application-specific modeling and the frequent lack of availability of implementations prevent the reuse of optimization models. This work presents sets of constraints as design patterns for mixed-integer linear optimization of common flexible energy resources and systems. Eight design patterns are identified and mathematically modeled. A reference implementation is then presented to facilitate reusability. Furthermore, a case study of a hydrogen production system demonstrates the applicability of the design patterns in energy optimization.
