Mechanical Response of Type 2 Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors Under Different Electric Loads

This paper aims to provide insight into the mechanical behaviour of Type 2 MLCCs (Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors) under different electrical loads. Considering that these capacitors utilize BaTiO3 as a dielectric material, which possesses well-known piezoelectric properties, applying an electrical signal to the terminations of the MLCCs shall generate a mechanical response. To examine this phenomenon, the MLCCs are positioned at various locations on a test PCB (Printed Circuit Board), and a correlation between the electrical signal and the mechanical response (e.g., displacement) is established. As this is one of the main causes of the capacitor’s singing phenomenon, the study aims to provide resourceful data for further analysis of the behaviour of Type 2 MLCCs. An in-depth analysis of the piezoelectric phenomenon present in MLCCs is also described.
