Design of a Half-Mode SIW Band-Pass Filter and Leaky Wave Antenna for X-Band Application

In this article, we present a novel design of a half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) that is transformed into an HMSIW filter and an HMSIW leaky wave antenna, intended for X-band wireless systems. The HMSIW retains the same propagation characteristics as a full-mode SIW, while offering a significant size reduction of half. The filter configuration incorporates a defected ground structure (DGS) and exhibits remarkable selectivity, boasting a low insertion loss of 1.3 dB. Operating at a central frequency of 7.25 GHz, the filter offers a bandwidth spanning from 7.5 GHz to 8.6 GHz, making it ideal for X-band applications. In spite of that, the leaky wave antenna achieves its functionality by integrating parallel slots in the upper ground plane. Resonating at 7.9 GHz and 9 GHz, the antenna demonstrates high gain, exceeding 8.5 dBi at both resonant frequencies.With these innovative designs, the proposed HMSIW filter and leaky wave antenna present a promising solution for X-band wireless systems, offering enhanced performance and compact size.
