Temperature Analysis of Fan-Shaped Contaminated Porcelain Insulators Using Thermal Imaging

Insulators have a central role in preventing disturbances in the electricity distribution system, such as phase-to-ground short circuits that can occur. Fan-shaped contamination is one of the problems that often occurs in insulators. This type of contamination is usually caused by rainwater or dew that carries dust, dirt, or salt and then dries on the insulator to form a fan-shaped pattern on the insulator surface. Non-Soluble Material Deposit Density (NSDD) and Equivalent Salt Deposit Density (ESDD) are two important parameters used to measure the level of contamination of an insulator. Temperature rise in a contaminated insulator is a potentially dangerous situation and can increase the risk of failure in electrical systems. Therefore, it is important to have a reliable monitoring system to accurately detect temperature changes. This research uses the thermal camera detection method to understand the behavior of insulators and the effect of contamination on the temperature of porcelain insulators. Tests of applying 20 kV voltage and taking thermal images on contaminated insulators were carried out after the conditioning process of the test chamber with 90 percent humidity. From the test results of each insulator, 6 thermal images and temperature trend values based on different times. The conclusion of the study shows that the use of thermal cameras is effective in detecting temperature changes in contaminated insulators. This is important for preventing the risk of failure in electrical systems and enabling timely preventive action.
