Design Aspects for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Wind Power Generators

The paper deals with the parameters of permanent magnet synchronous wind generators with gear and gearless drive. The object of the design study are 8000 kW synchronous generators with tangential magnetization and concentrated winding with three different rated speeds: 150 rpm, 40 rpm and 12 rpm. It is shown that the permanent magnet synchronous generator design with direct-drive and single-stage and multi-stage gearboxes can be performed with the same thermal and magnetic strength, with the same external characteristics and inductive parameters of the generator. The gearless generator does not exceed the gear generator in terms of materials, transportation and installation cost, as with the reduction in price of materials (copper and permanent magnets) the gearless generator benefits will increase. When solving transport and installation problems related to the mass and overall dimensions a high-power direct drive wind generator has a reasonable advantage in terms of reliability.
