The Observation of Avoided Mode Crossing Phenomenon in Microwave Resonators

This study investigates the avoided-mode crossing (AMC) phenomenon in microwave-coupled electrically small resonators, focusing on split-ring resonators (SRRs). While the investigation is carried out using microwave planar coupled SRRs, the concept can be generalized to any type of electrically small resonator. The study is based on two-synchronous SRRs coupled to a two-port microstrip line. The avoided-mode crossing is studied by varying the offset between the splits and the separation between SRRs facing each other (electric coupling). The study is conducted using a 3D numerical simulation from Ansys-HFSS. The results of the study demonstrate the potential of using the concept of AMC to design microwave filters and sensors for a variety of applications.
