Turning research into effective tools for shortcut mixed-mode problem-solving learning

A shortcut or brief form of problem-solving learning consisting of mixed modes and activities of learning was developed by incorporation of research into the lesson and then implemented for pharmaceutical analysis laboratory instruction. In this approach, research papers in the discipline previously selected by the teacher as a guide for problem-solving were given to the students for learning not only the new content related to the subject matter from the research findings (research-led learning) but also the research methodology employed in these works. In some learning activities, the data from the research works were provided to students for analysis instead of allowing them to do time-consuming experiments. By applying what they learned from the research combined with their former knowledge, they were able to systematically and effectively resolve a problem for the assigned case (research-based learning). Via this shortcut, it was possible to provide students with the maximum opportunity to learn covering the whole process used for the creation of a new analytical method even though the class time was limited. When this learning method was designed and implemented along with outcome-based education, collaborative learning and attractive hands-on experiments as well as the use of well-prepared instruction assisting tools such as the laboratory manual, it resulted in the students’ achievement of the learning goals, development of essential skills, and their positive responses.
