Detecting suspicious behaviour in power consumption with Fuzzy Logic

Losses in electricity networks have long been a concern for distribution system operators (DSOs), as they affect the operation of electricity networks and the financial management of utilities and end-users. Losses in electricity networks can be divided into two groups: technical and non-technical losses were also losses due to fraud in power consumption belong to. However, this problem is not only important from an economic perspective but also from a technical point of view. The trend in the development of electricity networks is going in the direction of smart networks that require new control mechanisms. In case of any unauthorized use of the network, this can present an issue that can jeopardize the reliability of supply. In this paper, the methodology and the results of the so-called Fraud detection tool are presented for the case of the Greek city of Xanthi, where the problem of fraud detection was tackled by using a so-called hybrid method based on Fuzzy Logic.
