Design of a Double-Jacket Closed-Type Calorimeter for Power Loss Measurement of Power Electronic Devices

The article discusses the challenges associated with accurately measuring energy losses in power systems, especially when dealing with harmonics and electromagnetic interference (EMI). While measuring input and output power may provide sufficient accuracy for DC-DC systems, it becomes more chal- lenging in systems with components that have high efficiency. To address this task, this article proposes a calorimetric approach to determine power converter system losses. Calorimetry involves measuring the amount of heat generated to determine energy losses. This method offers a high level of precision and is less susceptible to phase errors. The operating principle used in our calorimeter consists of maintaining a stable temperature through a PI controller. When heat is generated within the calorimeter, the control system rejects this heat. Through this rejection, the losses of the devices are measured. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the proposed approach.
