AGC performance improvement of two-area hybrid power systems using PIDDμF controller

This article proposed a novel proportional-integral-derivative plus fractional-order derivative with filter (PIDD
^μ
F) controller to enhance the AGC operation of two-area hybrid interconnected power systems. The hybrid power systems comprise a reheat turbine, solar thermal power unit (STPU), and electric vehicles (EV). In order to make analysis more realistic, communication time delay (CTD) between load dispatch center and generating units located in remote areas and generation rate constraints of thermal units are considered. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique is used to minimize the objective function. The system dynamics responses of the studied system with proposed controller are compared with PID controller under 1% step load perturbation in area-1 and found better simulation results of the system with proposed controller. The integration of EV into the two-area thermal-STPU system improved the system dynamics performance but considering the CTD model with EV, dynamics of the system deteriorated. Robustness of the proposed control strategy has been tested against wide changes in system nonlinearities.
