Detailed Modelling and Control Scheme for a Low-power Wind Energy Conversion System

In this paper, a grid-integrated low-power wind energy conversion system (WECS), using a back-to-back (B2B) power electronic converter, is presented. A permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), controlled using field oriented control (FOC), is used for variable speed tracking to extract maximum power from the turbine. The main objectives are to present a suitable power conversion system for low-power wind turbine, develop the detailed system modelling for the design of machine-side and grid-side controller in the dq-rotating reference frame, and model the suitable dual second order generalized integrator (DSOGI) phase locked loop (PLL) used for grid synchronisation. Apart from detailed theoretical analysis, the exhibited power conversion system, its control schemes and associated small-signal models are validated through pertinent numerical simulation model based results for a 2.2 kVA low-power WECS.
