Modeling of Power Generation System Configurations with Parallel Operated Variable Pitch Wind Turbines

This paper deals with simplified modeling of power generation systems of wind farms. Two wind farm configurations with three wind turbines are considered. The first one is the basic configuration with parallel DC connection of AC/DC converters of variable speed wind turbines and medium voltage AC transmission. The second configuration is the wind farm configuration with parallel AC connection of variable-speed wind turbine generators, a centralized AC/DC/AC power converter and medium voltage AC transmission. Simplified mathematical models of power generation systems of said wind farm configurations are presented. Torque-reference based control algorithms were used to maximize power captured by blades of wind turbines. Limitation of extracted energy by blades is performed using pitch angle control. Considered wind farm configurations were simulated under fixed time delays between wind patterns of turbines. Simulated performances of considered configurations have been compared and briefly discussed.
