Design and Performance Analysis of Standalone Solar PV based Electric Vehicle Charging Station

The increased concern about controlling environmental pollution elevates India’s demand for Electric Vehicles. When powered through the grid, these EVs increase the burden on the grid. Also, many of India’s traditional grids depend on conventional energy sources like fossil fuels. The quantity of fossil fuels is expected to go extinct shortly. Thus, a standalone Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station is necessary to integrate Renewable Energy Sources. This will also facilitate charging EVs in remote locations. The work presented here discusses the design aspects of a 30 W standalone solar PV based EV charging station with one day backup. The work also includes the design of controllers required to restore DC bus voltage and charge/discharge control of batteries. The working of the system is verified in MATLAB/Simulink for different solar insolation.
