Novel Plug-Socket DC Connector Based on Solid-State Switch for DC Building Applications

This paper proposes a novel plug-socket connector for DC power applications. Two slots are uniquely designed for the socket contact pins so that the positive and negative conductors are separated into two parts including main and auxiliary contacts, respectively. The conductors of the socket are shorted by the plug pins when transferring DC power. During the plug-out process, the DC current is channeled to the solid-state switch automatically before the switch is turned off instantly to stop the DC current. No electric arc is induced. Additionally, when no plug is inserted into the socket the auxiliary supply is physically disconnected from the bus voltage

due to the galvanic isolation of the two slots. Thus, no standby power is needed when the socket is not in use. Experimental results are given to verify the proposed socket-plug connector in achieving full-load (400 V, 10 A) disconnection arc-lessly.
