Simulation game for Visualisation and Forecasting based on Tableau Desktop

To promote business excellence and productivity, firms are now continuously exploring new technology techniques. Business intelligence deployment approaches offer strategic, tactical, and operational insights which therefore requires qualified Business Intelligence (BI) professionals. Even though the essence of BI systems is easy to understand, there still exists a skill discrepancy to explore BI concepts in industry. This article demonstrates how a gaming approach that integrates Tableau Desktop is built in a way to supplement the traditional teaching methods due to the multiple complexities inherent with the current BI teaching techniques. With animated videos, quizzes, and simulation games, users were exposed to and involved in lectures and exercises. We primarily concentrate on Tableau Desktop for visualisation and forecasting as a unified system together including descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics. The assessment results obtained from BI and non-BI participants show that various key constructs such as level of interest in learning, understanding and confidence shapes the effectiveness of using Tableau Desktop simulation games that leads to BI software exposure.
