On the Prevention of Voltage Resonance at the Point of Wind Farm Connection to the Distribution Network

Worldwide, there is large-scale introduction of wind farms that are connected to distribution networks. These power generation facilities increasingly more often use type IV wind turbines with inverters. The wind farms are connected according to the power evacuation arrangement, which involves an analysis of the effect of inverters on power quality indicators at the point of connection to the network. The paper presents the results of assessing the possibility and conditions for the voltage resonance at high frequencies in 110kV and 35kV distribution networks when wind farms are connected to them. Calculations are performed using a computational model of a real-life power system in the PowerFactory software. The findings suggest that the installation of typical filters by wind turbine manufacturers does not exclude the risk of voltage resonance, which negatively affects the electrical equipment of wind farms, distribution networks, and consumers. The calculations of the power quality indicators prove the effectiveness of additional filters when installed at the 35 kV wind farm buses to prevent accidents damaging electrical equipment.
