Design of an IoT-Based Energy Monitoring Node

It is challenging to manage building energy use since it is stochastic and is impacted by factors like occupancy and weather. For enhancing power quality and dependability in smart grids, the adoption of IoT-based smart electricity monitoring devices is a promising alternative. The design of an IoT-based sensor node that enables building-wide monitoring of electrical energy is presented in this study. The design is based on Wi-Fi and it incorporates both online and offline data storage capabilities, home appliances feature sampling and processing are respectively achieved by the use of a non-invasive current sensor in addition to a voltage sensor as well as ESP32 and Arduino microcontrollers. The effectiveness of the system is assessed by measuring the power consumption of various home appliances. The examination of measurement errors performed using purely statistical method confirms the design's high accuracy and linearity standards as well as by benchmarking the system data with a DL10065N power measuring unit. However, there is need for further development, especially for low-power appliances poor linearity, and considerable measurement bias in high power appliance both resulting from circuit noise.
