Enhancing DFIG Performance in Wind Turbine Applications through POD Integrated Control: RTDS Validation

This study uses modelling and OPAL-RT: Real-Time simulation techniques to examine the performance of a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) under varying wind speed conditions and three-phase fault. The electrical, mechanical, and control models of the DFIG system are developed to capture its behaviour. The effects of wind speed on key performance parameters, including active power, reactive power, DC-link voltage, and terminal voltage, are investigated. The analysis incorporates both scenarios with and without integrating a Power Oscillation Damping (POD) controller for the Rotor Side Converter (RSC) of DFIG. The POD controller is used under severe disturbance to enhance the controller’s performance. Simulation results are presented and compared to establish the impact of wind speed variations and the efficiency of the POD control strategy. Simulation and real-time results also reveal the transient responses and system performance under different conditions, highlighting the importance of control strategies in stabilizing the DFIG-based Wind Turbine Generator.
