A Novel Magnetic Geared Switched Reluctance Motor with Reduced Number of Air-gaps

Magnetic gear integrated electric motors are becoming increasingly popular for their compact size and high torque density. However, the presence of multiple co-axial members contributes to system complexity and reliability. In this paper, a novel magnetic geared segmented rotor switched reluctance motor with reduced number of members and air-gaps, meant for high speed applications, is proposed. In the proposed topology, both the motor and the magnetic gear are realised with only three members, i.e., two air-gaps. While lesser number of members results in a compact structure, reduced number of air-gaps leads to reduced mechanical complexity and easier assembly of the system, especially in multi-port motors where there are multiple rotating members. Additionally, the proposed topology utilises the principle of reluctance magnetic gear thus reducing the usage of permanent magnet material. Two different configurations of this novel topology are proposed here which are designed and subjected to finite element analysis for performance evaluation.
