Wireless Sensor Network Using Millimeter Wave for Chemical Detection

We provided real-time detection of hazardous chemicals at a distance of at least 1 m or longer which is classified as a standoff environment. This was developed using an active millimeter wave technology by transmitting a frequency-modulated continuous wave radar (FMCW) chirp signal and capturing the backscatter energy of the reflected signal. The reflected signal was transformed to its corresponding spectral value and compared to the characterized spectral signature of the chemicals present in hazardous chemicals. The data was processed using a computational intelligence system to improve the resolution of the signal and to efficiently identify the chemical component The system showed a higher level of sensitivity and selectivity compared to the existing systems.
