A Modified FEM Implementation for Stratified Medium Impinged by Horizontally Incident Plane Waves

A modified finite element method (AMFEM) is developed to simulate the scattering problem of electromagnetic plane waves impinge on isotropic lossless multi-layered medium structure and analyze the reflection and transmission coefficients at the interfaces. AMFEM reduces complex 3-D spatial layered structure to 1-D planar stratified medium, basis functions are applied to discretize and interpolate partial differential equations for obtaining numerical solutions. In this article, a multi-layered isotropic lossless medium model is utilized to verify the feasibility of the algorithm, the relative dielectric constant of the medium presented a Gaussian distribution feature. The ultimate numerical results indicate that this modified FEM method significantly saves the computational resources and improves the efficiency and accuracy compared to the traditional numerical algorithms.
