A Design for Improving Antenna Gain Based on Frequency Selective Surface

In this paper, a combination of antenna and frequency-selective surface (FSS) is proposed. The antenna is a circularly polarized patch antenna with a center frequency of 405 MHz and a bandwidth of 10 MHz. A single design of FSS is used in this paper to achieve better phase control, thereby controlling the beam of the circularly polarized feed. This enhances the far-field gain of the feed and improves the beam width of the circularly polarized antenna. By loading FSS around and on the top of the circularly polarized antenna, the effective area of the antenna is increased, resulting in a gain enhancement of 6.5 dB and an improvement of 20° in the half-power beamwidth.
