Design and Comparative Study of a Novel Double-Rotor Vernier Permanent Magnet Machine for Wind Tower Tuned Mass Damper Application

This paper proposes a novel double-rotor vernier permanent magnet machine (DRVPMM) for potential application in wind tower tuned mass damper (TMD) systems. The impact of wind-induced loads on wind towers exhibits time variabilities. Therefore, the DRVPMM is set to operate in three different working states. Considering the varying performance requirements of the DRVPMM under different operating conditions, a multi-objective optimization of the DRVPMM’s structure is proposed, based on the co-simulation between Ansys-Maxwell and Optislang software. Firstly, the optimization objectives are set to maximize efficiency, minimize torque ripple, and maximize output torque. Secondly, Evolutionary algorithms (EA) are used to optimize the machine parameters and the objectives set on three different working states. Thirdly, select candidate cases that meet all three working states simultaneously. Finally, a weighted function is used for the final selection of candidate cases. Based on the proposed design method, the optimized machine meets the requirements of the TMD system.
