Frequency-Selective Surface that Blocks Different WLAN Bands Based on Polarization

Many safety-sensitive Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) applications rely on crowded frequency bands for short-range communication. In this context, Frequency-Selective Surfaces (FSSs) enlarge the space of possibilities to solve new Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) challenges through intelligent design. In this paper, we propose and test an FSS that is able to select between 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz signals based on polarization. Our low-cost, hand-made prototype is mechanically flexible, what expands the FSS range of uses. The measured transmission from 2.27 to 2.8 GHz is below −10 dB for vertically polarized waves and above −1 dB for horizontally polarized ones. The contrary happens from 5.45 to 5.96 GHz, with transmission above −1 dB and below −10 dB for vertical and horizontal polarizations, respectively.
