EV Component Sizing using NEDC and WLTP Drive Cycles

An economically viable and long-lasting electric vehicle model is developed to meet the demands of both rural and urban environments effectively and resiliently. Both the worldwide harmonized light-duty test cycle and a new European driving cycle are deployed to evaluate the performance and assess the capabilities of a designed electric vehicle. The proposed work aims to design an energy-efficient brushless direct current motor for the suggested model to ensure reliable and smooth operation. Considering the specifications of the Renault Twingo Electric vehicle model, including the vehicle parameters, the performance metrics of the designed vehicle are calculated on both test cycles. The power generated for the suggested model under the employed test cycles is lower than the Renault model leading to a smaller size and reduced cost motor. Furthermore, the model on the worldwide harmonized light-duty test cycle produces higher power and torque than those under the new European driving cycle. Consequently, the motor required for the new European driving cycle is smaller and less expensive compared to the one needed for the worldwide harmonized light-duty. Moreover, the suggested model covers a greater distance under the worldwide harmonized light-duty test cycle and has higher battery consumption as compared to the new European driving cycle. The designed model can calculate power, torque, mileage, and battery parameters by providing different vehicle parameters during various test cycles.
