Current-Sensorless Digital Current-Programed Control of Integrated Dual DC Boost Converter

Current-programed controllers are essential for power flow management among different terminals of multiport dc–dc converter topologies. The feedback input to these controllers, most commonly, are inductor currents of the concerned topology, which can be either directly sensed or estimated measurements. The presence of multiple dedicated current sensors within a multiport dc–dc converter involves the use of auxiliary conditioning and power circuits, synchronized feedback measurements, and dedicated analog-to-digital conversion stages. The integrated dual-dc boost converter (IDDBC) topology is a three-port dc–dc converter where power flow among the ports can be regulated through current programed control of its two inductor currents. This article evaluates the performance of a novel current estimation technique to digitally compute the instantaneous magnitude of both inductor currents of the integrated dual-dc boost converter topology with minimum measurement overhead. This current sensorless measurement approach uses one analog comparator together with terminal voltage measurements to estimate current both in continuous and discontinuous modes. The performance of the proposed method has been validated through the implementation of a regulated 200-W IDDBC prototype with output voltage and input current control.
