Design and Reliability Assessment of Inductor for Non-isolated DC-DC Buck Converter

The efficient conversion of electrical power is essential for modern electronic devices and systems. DC-DC converters play a pivotal role in this process by enabling voltage regulation and power conversion across various applications. Among these converters, the buck converter stands out for its ability to step down voltage levels while maintaining high efficiency. The design and reliability analysis of inductors for DC-DC buck converters constitutes a critical aspect of power electronics engineering that significantly impacts both efficiency and overall system reliability. This research paper presents the design and reliability analysis of an inductor for a 24 to 12v DC-DC buck converter, using the innovative Area Product Approach (APA). This approach optimizes the inductor design by considering a combination of the core material, geometrical dimensions, and winding configurations to achieve a balance between magnetic performance, size constraints, and energy efficiency. Furthermore, the research extends its focus to the evaluation of inductor reliability and its supporting factors, providing insights into the inductor’s anticipated operational lifespan and failure behavior.
