Comparative Analysis of Two Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Machine for In Wheel Traction Applications

In this paper, the axial field flux-switching permanent magnet (AFFSPM) machine and the axial flux rotor consequent-pole permanent magnet (AFRCPPM) machine are comparatively investigated. Firstly, the topologies of the two machines are analyzed in detailed. According to the torque production mechanism, the torque equations are derived. Then, the performances of the two machines based on the same dimensions, material characteristics and operating speed are comparatively studied. Finally, the results indicate that the AFRCPPM machine exhibits larger torque capacity, lower torque ripple, stronger overload capacity, and higher power/torque density. It is very suitable for in wheel traction applications.
