Study of Electromagnetic Stress Reinforced Structure of Racetrack HTS Magnet for MW-Class Wind Turbine Generator

Racetrack high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets are a leading choice for replacing conventional wind turbine generator's permanent magnets due to their capability of generating strong magnetic fields (>5 Tesla). However, the combination of high-fields and high excitation currents induces immense electromagnetic stress at the GPa level within the HTS magnets, posing risks of structural damage or quenching during operation. To tackle this challenge, we designed a racetrack HTS magnet with a surface magnetic field exceeding 5 Tesla, tailored for MW-class wind turbine generators. Conducting an analysis combined with electromagnetics and structural mechanics, we replicated electromagnetic stress behavior, confirming stress concentration and localized deformation in the magnet's winding. Leveraging these insights, we devised a reinforcing structure using carbon fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP), effectively mitigating electromagnetic stress and deformation within the racetrack HTS magnet.
