Geometric Parameter Optimization of Underbrink Array Based on Response Surface Method

In the recent years, the Underbrink array is one of the most frequently used planar arrays for acoustic imaging. However, there is no guidance for the array to select geometric parameters. In this paper, by applying the response surface method to Underbrink array, we propose a new method to decide the geometric parameters. First, we build a regression model of the width of the main lobe with respect to the geometric parameters of the Underbrink array including the number of microphones, the number of helical arms, and the aperture of the array. Then, according to the constructed regression model, the value range of a parameter can be determined to obtain the optimal parameter combination in this range. Simulation results show that, by exploiting the proposed method, we obtain better geometry parameters for the Underbrink array.
