A Simple Control Strategy for Three-Phase Vienna Rectifier via Input Impedance Regulation

Vienna rectifiers are widely used as the rectification units for generators in transportation systems to generate DC voltage due to their high efficiency and high-reliability features. Typically, the two most widely used control methods for Vienna rectifiers are the space vector pulse width modulation and the carrier-based PWM strategies. However, the implementations of these two methods depend on the information on the generators' rotor position and stator inductances, which highly influences their applications. This paper proposes a simple power factor correction method for the Vienna rectifier, which is achieved by controlling each input phase's impedance to be purely resistive. The rotor position, stator inductance, dq transformation calculation, and complex vector positioning and zoning are avoided to implement the proposed control method, resulting in reduced computational cost. The operational principle of the proposed method is first elaborated on. Afterward, its validity is verified by experiments performed by a 600W laboratory prototype.
