Design Considerations of Variable Pole Induction Motors for EV Applications

The design of an induction motor (IM) for electric vehicle (EV) applications must consider several factors to ensure reliable, efficient, and cost-effective performance. One such design consideration is the use of variable poles in the IM. Variable pole motors offer several benefits for EV applications, including possible gearbox elimination, reduced torque ripple, and the ability to optimize the operating point for different load conditions. However, the design and implementation of variable pole motors present unique challenges that have not been fully investigated. This paper provides an overview of the design considerations for variable pole IMs, including a discussion of the benefits and challenges. This paper also highlights key areas for further research to help ensure the continued improvement of variable pole IMs for EV and other applications.
