Multi-objective Optimization of the Control Parameters of SRM incorporating Core Loss Estimation

Optimization of control parameters like turn-on angle, turn-off angle, and reference current is crucial to get a switched reluctance motor (SRM) to operate as efficiently as possible. This paper describes a new multi-objective optimization technique for finding the best control parameters of SRMs to maximize efficiency, torque per current, and minimize the torque ripple. First, the core loss is estimated based on the real flux density and flux intensity waveforms of different parts of the SRM as a function of rotor position and applied current, which were obtained using finite element analysis (FEA). Then the calculated core loss is used to measure the efficiency of the SRM for different combinations of control parameters. For each torque-speed operating point, an optimization algorithm is made to find the desired objectives. An objective function is defined, and the best control parameters that meet the objective are chosen, thus giving the optimized machine. Lastly, simulation results are presented to show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed controller for a 12-slot/8-pole 3-phase 4.5 kW SRM.
